Welcome to OJ’s Care, a registered charity based in Lancashire, UK, dedicated to providing inclusive activities for children and adults with autism, learning difficulties, and associated disorders. Our family-centred sessions take place at Hillside Special School in Longridge (PR3 3XB).
My name is Lisa Donoghue, and I founded OJ’s Care out of a deep understanding of the challenges faced by families like mine. As a mother of four, including Oliver, my son with autism, I experienced firsthand the barriers to accessing mainstream spaces. Simple outings became daunting tasks, often leading to isolation and frustration. I felt my family were misunderstood and judged, struggling to find acceptance and support in a world that didn’t always understand
our reality.
Our journey has been marked by countless moments of misunderstanding and prejudice. From insensitive remarks to outright discrimination, we’ve faced it all. I vividly recall incidents where Oliver’s behaviour was met with disapproval or incomprehension, leaving me feeling helpless and alone. It was in these moments of vulnerability that the seeds of OJ’s Care were planted—a desire to create a safe haven where families like ours could find understanding, acceptance,
and belonging.
As Oliver has grown into a young man, navigating the complexities of autism has only become more challenging. Yet, through it all, I’ve remained committed to fostering a community where families can find solace and support amidst the chaos. I understand the isolating nature of autism and the toll it can take on relationships and social connections. That’s why OJ’s Care is not just a charity; it’s a lifeline—a place where families can come together, share their experiences, and find strength in peer-to-peer support.
